Metropolis

In the 1980s, the American composer Michael Daugherty dedicated a symphony in five movements to Metropolis’, the imaginary megalopolis that is the setting for Superman’s adventures.
After a new work by Canadian composer Keiko Devaux commissioned by Ars Musica, the internationally renowned pianist sisters Katia and Marielle Labèque take to the stage for Philip Glass’ Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra.
Composers Charles Ives and George Gerschwin were equally impressed by the city. The former’s Central Park in the Dark depicts a warm summer night in New York’s Central Park, while George Gerschwin’s An American in Paris is a musical impression of his visit to Paris in 1928.
