Haunted by the image of Troy drowning in blood and flames, Aeneas travels the seas. He lands in Carthage, home to the beautiful Dido. At first cold and fearful, the princess soon develops an all-consuming passion for the Trojan and accepts his proposal of marriage. But a message urges Aeneas to continue his journey without delay. In despair, he breaks off their engagement and returns to port to prepare his ship. At the last moment, Aeneas turns around and declares his love for Dido once again, but Dido rejects him before slowly dying of a broken heart.
Based on Henry Purcell’s essential baroque opera, choreographer Blanca Li revisits the myth of Dido and Aeneas for ten dancers in this decisively contemporary production. Drawing on her experience in film, fashion and music – including prestigious collaborations with the likes of Pedro Almodóvar, Daft Punk and Beyoncé – she ingeniously blends song and dance in a refined scenography full of striking images.
