Galia Bisengalieva transcends genre. The Kazakh violinist, composer and producer succeeds time after time in reinventing her instrument, resulting in the most atmospheric of music. Her virtuosity and inventiveness have led to close collaborations with great names from various outposts of the musical world: from Pauline Oliveros, Terry Riley and Hildur Guðnadóttir to Thom Yorke, Jlin and Actress. Bisengalieva’s latest album Polygon (2023) uses a minimum of resources – the violin, voice, a few traditional Kazakh instruments and electronics – to reveal an expansive, sometimes ominous, musical landscape. Wisps of folk, ambient, invocatory drones and echoes of a lost club merge smoothly into each other and resound above Bisengalieva’s violin. Find out at Bozar why this violinist is considered “…a powerful force in new and primordial music”.
