Morton Feldman can distort our sense of time like no other. The American composer stretches time, slows it down and stops it altogether. With a boundless imagination and exceptional feel for sound colour, he repeats small motifs in ever-changing ways. In the majestic late trio Crippled Symmetry, the different instruments have a meticulously written out score but are not precisely synchronised. Symmetry only appears to exist here, just like in the Anatolian carpets that inspired Feldman. The virtuoso musicians of Het Collectief are the ideal performers for this meditative yet intense music. “Do we have anything in music for example that really wipes everything out? That just cleans everything away?” Feldman once asked himself. Discover how close his music comes to doing exactly that.
