Is the American guitarist Julian Lage the heir to the throne of jazz royals like John Scofield and Pat Metheny? The New York Times described him as “one of jazz’s breezier virtuosos, possessed of an unflappable technical facility and a seemingly boundless curiosity.” Julian Lage’s lively album Speak To Me was released on Blue Note in 2023. The album is intimate in tone yet impressive in intention, representing one of the most ambitious music projects Lage has documented to date. His own compositions build on traditional American music, ranging from gospel and country blues to Californian singer-songwriter numbers and punchy jazz. Expectations are high, but Lage and his prestigious quartet are sure to fulfil them all.
