Las Novias del Sur by Elena López Riera + Soft Fiction by Chick Strand

As part of our series Our Burning World: Love is Louder, we invite you to explore two films that offer a profound reflection on relationships, the body, and female heritage.
In Las Novias del Sur, mature women share their experiences of marriage and intimacy. Through these deeply traditional stories, the director questions her own status as a single woman without children, thus breaking the mother-daughter lineage. This poignant film, which won the Queer Palm at Cannes in 2024, is a striking testimony to desire and generational transmission.
Soft Fiction is a cult documentary in which Chick Strand collaborates with five women, exploring their experiences through raw and honest narratives. Using her unique technique, which focuses on intimate gestures and expressions, she offers a sensitive portrayal of female sexuality.
Mildred Chick” Strand (1931 – 2009) was an experimental American filmmaker known for blending avant-garde techniques with documentary.
Elena López Riera is a visual artist and filmmaker from Spain. Her short film Pueblo (2015) was presented at the Directors’ Fortnight, and The Entrails (2016) at the Locarno Film Festival. Her short Los Que Desean (2018) won several awards.
