A conversation with Berlinde De Bruyckere on the occasion of Khorós, the major solo exhibition dedicated to the Belgian artist by Bozar. Inspired by the Flemish Renaissance and Christian iconography, she intertwines mythology with contemporary narratives to reflect on life and death. Topics such as humanity, the condition humaine, and her various sources of inspiration are discussed in the conversation.
Through her work, De Bruyckere explores themes such as vulnerability, suffering, and transformation, bringing to life striking sculptures crafted from wax, animal skins, and organic materials. De Bruyckere’s work has been exhibited worldwide in renowned institutions, with universal themes of fragility and resilience as a central thread. She represented Belgium at the Venice Biennale in 2013, where she collaborated with writer J.M. Coetzee.
