A night of poetry, activism and music.
Last year, American poet Aja Monet released her album When the Poems Do What They Do. With her band The Surrealists, she fuses jazz and poetry into a dynamic blend of activism and imagination. Monet’s Grammy nomination marked her global debut, building on her long-standing reputation in poetry circles as a captivating performer and the author of collections such as My Mother Was a Freedom Fighter. This brought her to Europe on several occasions and also led to a collaboration with the Brussels-based collective, The Warrior Poets.
Monet is one of the headline guests at the Afropolitan Festival. She leads a sofa session with young people on Friday, will discuss her work as part of the Meet the Writer series on Saturday, and concluding the festival on Sunday with a concert alongside ESINAM.
Dalilla Hermans leads the conversation with this icon-in-the-making. They will discuss topics such as Black power, feminism and social justice, but above all, poetry and the imagination.
