Ryuichi Sakamoto | Opus by Neo Sora

  • Events

Opus, directed by Neo Sora, is a unique documentary, a testament and a dedication of love that portrays his father Ryuichi Sakamoto’s relationship with music and the piano over the course of a day.
In 2022, after a long absence from the stage because of his cancer diagnosis, Ryuichi Sakamoto decided to go into the studio one more time and record a synthesis of his work. The father at the piano, the son behind the camera: two artists celebrate the life of a musician. The 20 pieces in the film, compiled by Sakamoto himself, wordlessly recount his life through his music, from his popstar period as part of the Yellow Magic Orchestra to his magnificent Bertolucci film scores and music from his meditative last album 12.
Born in 1991, Neo Sora was raised in New York and Tokyo. He is a filmmaker, artist, and translator. As a filmmaker, he has directed, shot, and produced short narrative films, documentaries, music videos, fashion spots, and now ventured with his last project into the realm of the concertfilm.
In the fall of 2024, Bozar will feature a Close-up on Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul, including his first virtual reality project, A Conversation with the Sun. Since Ryuichi Sakamoto composed the music for this unsettling experience, it was only natural to include this unique documentary in our programming.
