The first screening of the film Walk-up will be introduced by Nina de Vroome, a Dutch author, teacher and filmmaker (with Globes (2021) as her most recent work). She is a writer and editor for online film magazine Sabzian.
Walk-Up is one of Hong Sangsoo’s most complex films in terms of temporality and use of space. The film daydreams about what it would be like to live someone else’s life or to live your own life differently. The story follows Byungsoo, a film director, who visits a building owned by an old friend established in the design field, accompanied by his daughter Jeongsu, an aspiring interior designer. The three of them chat and drink amicably until a business call pulls Byungsoo away. When he returns, it’s the same place, but a different time…
For two weeks, Bozar offers an extensive programme consisting of nine films featuring some of Hong Sangsoo’s earliest works and a selection of the films he made in his most recent years. Hong Sangsoo first gained attention in 1996 with The Day a Pig Fell into the Well. Over the years, he has earned numerous international awards. Besides being a professor of screenwriting and directing in Seoul, he remains one of the most inventive and prolific filmmakers in contemporary cinema.
