In Verniers latest instalment he further explores his alienating blend of fiction, documentary and a hint of magical realism, that he has been refining other the years. An intriguing free floating narrative of this singular director that is again set on the Côte d’Azur where Afine spends one last evening with his friends before they fly off to Dubai. After a night full of stories and secrets, he finds himself alone in the deserted streets of Monaco, a city as opulent as a medieval castle. A spellbinding stroll on the edge between apocalyptic fiction and social documentary.
Born in 1976, Virgil Vernier is a French director, screenwriter and actor of Romanian origin who is one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary French cinema. He made his first film, Autoproduction, in 2009, and since then has alternated between short and feature-length films with a singular tone. Straddling the line between fiction, documentary and myth he forges narratives that often hint at magical realism. His work is regularly selected for major festivals (Cannes, Berlin, Rotterdam, etc.), and in 2019 we welcomed him here in Bozar with his films Mercuriales (2014) and Andorre (2013). In 2024 his feature Cent Mille Milliards was presented in competition at Locarno.
