We are treated to three string quartets for the price of one. Because in Steve Reich’s Triple Quartet, one string quartet plays, while a recording of two others chimes in. In their 50 years of existence, the Kronos Quartet handed out one composition commission after another - such as this one to Steve Reich in 1998 - but also tackles existing work. From their recent Sun Ra tribute album - along with minimalists Sara Miyamoto and Terry Riley - they play the kaleidoscopic Outer Spaceways Incorporated, a work that sounds somewhere between a jingle for a space company and the soundtrack to the end of the world. Riley’s string quartet Good Medicine and Gold Came From Space, a commission from Kronos to Aleksandra Vrebalov from 2023, follow. The quartet also welcomes two new members: violinist Gabriela Díaz and viola player Ayane Kozasa.
Prior to this concert, there will be concerts on Sunday afternoon as part of ‘50 for the Future’, a project by Kronos Quartet. Twenty-five string quartets of various levels will play a marathon performance of contemporary compositions together, spread across the halls of the Centre of Fine Arts. These concerts are open to the public for free.
