An encounter with one of the most prominent German writers of our time. Daniel Kehlmann gained international recognition with Measuring the World, and was shortlisted for the International Booker Prize for his novel about Till Eulenspiegel. His most recent novel, The Director [Lichtspiel in German], further underscores his unique talent.
In The Director, Kehlmann immerses readers in the tumultuous life of G.W. Pabst, the renowned filmmaker behind the iconic Pandora’s Box, starring Louise Brooks. Pabst fled the Nazi regime, but was eventually ensnared in Goebbels’s power games. The book is a compelling reflection on the relationship between art and power in the age of totalitarianism. It also reveals how Pabst lost himself in trying to remain true to his art.
At this evening’s discussion, Kehlmann will share his insights and experiences with Nicky Aerts, shedding light on the inspiration and creative process behind his captivating narrative.
Kehlmann is a guest of honour at this year’s Foire du livre de Bruxelles.
